Secret Orchard Cider, a craft producer specialising in small-batch ciders and low intervention methods, has launched its first Cornish cider.
The crisp, refreshing cider is made using 100% pure Cornish apple juice – hand-picked, pressed and packaged in Cornwall.
Todd Studley, Co-Founder of Secret Orchard Cider, said: “We are extremely excited to release this first parcel of what will become our Cornish range. We are on the hunt for other small orchards in Cornwall this year so that we can grow production.”
Secret Orchard is based in Exmoor National Park in Somerset, where Todd and his business partner Joe Heley grew up; now living in Cornwall, Todd was keen to expand his range of ciders by working with quality Cornish apples.
Having dual sites in Somerset and Cornwall will allow Todd and Joe to grow their range, for example by producing single-variety ciders from apples like _ and _.
The Secret Orchard brand prides itself on artisan techniques; no concentrate or sulphites are added, and only naturally occurring yeasts are used.
Joe explained the levels of work required: “We hand-pick almost every apple ourselves, with some help from friends and family. We press every single batch, and watch over each barrel as it slowly matures.”
This approach resulted in the fledgling enterprise receiving a prestigious Silver Medal at the 2016 British Cider Championships – the biggest cider competition in the world.
Todd said: “We can’t wait to see where our Cornish cider-making journey takes us. Our cider is very food-friendly and we are looking forward to working with local restaurants and pubs who appreciate small-batch techniques.”
Secret Orchard Cider is currently available at Scarlet Wines, Lelant; The Sportsman, Heamoor; Senara Restaurant, Penzance; and at Woodfired Canteen events across Cornwall.
The Secret Orchard Cider Bar will also be appearing at St Ives Food and Drink Festival in May.
