Sennen Family Surf Comp Launched

untitled-5 (1) medresA group of local businesses are teaming up during Half Term to deliver a fun surfing competition on the 28th and 29th October; it will be the first of its kind at Sennen, with opportunities for all the family to get involved.

Ben Tunnicliffe Sennen Cove – the popular restaurant and venue with commanding views of the bay – will be the hub for the event, which Ben and the team are hosting in association with Sennen Surfing Centre and Smart Surf School.

Dave Muir, Head Coach at Sennen Surfing Centre, is excited to be involved, saying: “This event will be the perfect opportunity for children and adults to show off the skills they have learnt over the summer, but more importantly to come together and have some fun before the winter brings tricky surfing conditions.”

The Sennen Surf Comp is also a chance to reflect and celebrate the life of local lifeboatman and surfer Ashley Moffatt, whom the community continues to remember fondly over a decade since his fatal car accident.

Everyone from beginners through to serious surfers will have the chance to take part, with prizes available in several categories (the total prize pot is £1,000) and other fun activities taking place on the beach as well as those in the water.

Ben Tunnicliffe, who opened the doors of his eponymous restaurant at Sennen back in March, can’t wait to watch the fun unfold:

“We’ll be hosting prize ceremonies, a barbeque on the terrace (weather permitting) and an after-party with live music and DJs. The restaurant will be open all week for people to warm up and refuel after enjoying themselves in the water; we will have our new woodburner installed and comfy leather sofas to sink into.”

On opening, Ben promised that the iconic building which overlooks the beach would be hub for the community all year round and he hasn’t disappointed; the restaurant shows the work of local artists, hosted yoga sessions and weekly barbeques in the summer, showcases young musicians from the area and supports local food producers.

The menu is designed around families and includes delicious fish and chips and ling burgers, as well as Ben’s Market Selection – a specials board inspired by the catch of the day.

The restaurant team is anticipating a busy weekend during the Surf Comp, with hot chocolate on tap, and perhaps the odd local cider or beer for adults as a reward for taking part.

The poster for the event has been designed by local artist Mat McIvor.
