Three regular stallholders at Truro Farmers Market are celebrating this week, after receiving stars in TheGreat Taste Awards 2015.
The Great Taste Awards are widely acknowledged as the most respected food accreditation scheme for artisan and speciality food producers; they are judged by over 400 food critics, chefs, cooks, restaurateurs, producers and a host of food writers and journalists.
Visitors to Truro Farmers Market can shop for cheese, pork and liqueurs which have been singled out for praise at this year’s awards.
Primrose Herd, breeders and finishers of traditional breed pigs, has been awarded stars for three products - Dry Cured Smoked Back Bacon, Dry Cured Smoked Streaky Bacon and Large Black Belly Pork.
Sally and Bill Lugg take a non-intensive approach to caring for their herd; the pigs are reared outdoors and enjoy a better diet and slower growth than commercial production methods allow.
This results in a special taste and texture which the judges singled out for praise at The Great Taste Awards, where products are up against tough competition from across the UK.
Spirits of Cornwall, a producer of flavoured liqueurs which was only launched in 2014, also came away with a star for its Blackcurrant Liqueur.
Gill Doble, Owner of Spirits of Cornwall, said: “Being part of ‘the most exclusive club in fine food’ is a huge privilege and has given me renewed confidence in my products. The backing of The Guild of Fine Food and the Great Taste Awards will spur me on to further develop my flavour combinations, as they are obviously going down well!”
A failed batch of marmalade and a bottle of gin was the inspiration that led Gill to begin developing her range of original flavours, all of which have great depth and complexity.
As well as Primrose Herd and Spirits of Cornwall, who both sell direct at market, several local cheeses singled out in the Great Taste Awards are available via The Cornish Smokehouse.
Proprietor Nigel Ekins is the proud stockist of Keltic Gold and Cornish Crumbly (both from Whalesborough Cheese), St Endellion and Cornish Brie (from Arla Foods - Trevarrian Creamery).
Each of these products came away with a star in The Great Taste Awards, emphasising the range of great quality cheeses available at market each week.
Truro Farmers Market is a key platform for emerging food enterprises as well as some of the most sought-after producers on the scene, as shown by these most recent awards.
