Elemental Cornish Gin Passes the Taste Test

Elemental Cornish Gin, produced by a family of artisan distillers, has been awarded a Taste of The West ‘Gold’ Award, less than a year after it was first launched.
The Gin is the brainchild of Jon and Jilly Meyer of Tregonetha and is one of the first gins to be made in Cornwall for some 300 years.
Admiring the subtle flavours offered by the spirit and finding inspiration in the new wave of artisan distilleries emerging in London, the couple decided to create their own signature blend which was launched at the Choose Cornish Awards Ceremony in September 2013. Jon and Jilly are joined in the distilling business by their two eldest children Jeremy and Alice, who are responsible for the historical spirit, which originated in Holland, reaching new audiences.
Elemental is hand-crafted in small batches, using a traditional copper-headed still. The blend of exotic botanicals is key (they include Juniper berries from Italy and Croatia, Orris Root from Morocco and Coriander Seed from Spain) and the exact recipe is a closely guarded family secret. The result is a wonderfully complex and well balanced gin that mixes complete dryness with delicious grassy overtones and a long, gentle spicy finish. Cornish spring water from Just Water in Bodmin is used – blending the carefully sourced ingredients from around the world with a taste of Cornwall.
Jon and Jilly were thrilled to win a prized Taste of the West Gold award in the category of Wines, Spirits and Liqueurs, where they were up against stiff opposition. “We are so pleased that our family endeavor has been well received,” said Jilly. “The last few years have been quite a journey, with developing the unique recipe, sourcing ingredients, setting up the distillery and working with our wonderful Cornish partners. We pride ourselves on using Cornish Designers for our name and logo, web design, printing etc, even the branded clothes we wear at events come from Cornish suppliers.
It’s fantastic to work as a family; we share the hard work now we share this wonderful sense of achievement.”
Elemental Gin makes a regular appearence at Truro Farmers Market on Saturdays (Lemon Quay, 10-4).
