Ground-Breaking Digital Start-Up Strengthens Team And Network
Pixxcell, an ambitious Cornwall-based project which is set to revolutionise digital storytelling, has recruited a talented Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and become a member of GAIN20 – a regional network which supports cutting edge innovation.
These latest developments mark the final stages before the eagerly-anticipated re-launch of the platform this autumn.
Pixxcell is a unique interface for viewing images of any place, from any time; it allows people to combine their own pictures with those from other sources, such as Creative Commons images from Flickr and the world’s largest digital archive (Getty Images), to tell visual stories inspired by travels in space and time – both real and imagined.
CTO Ben Scott joins Pixxcell from the Natural History Museum in London, where he managed the delivery of the museum’s open data platform – making 3,208,475 of the Museum’s 80 million specimens available online.
Ben grew up in Cornwall before pursuing his career in Brighton and London, and has been looking for the perfect opportunity to return to his Cornish roots for some time.
Ben’s experience in managing huge amounts of data and making it accessible is proving invaluable, as the team at Pixxcell aim to create a user-friendly interface restricted only by the limits of imagination.
Pixxcell CEO Melissa Mercer commented: “Ben has helped us move forward very quickly and ironed out a few glitches. With his drive and expertise giving us huge confidence, we are now looking to re-launch a bigger and better service in September.”
Pixxcell has also been given a further boost by joining the GAIN20 network – an initiative by Plymouth University to identify the most exciting and innovative entrepreneurs in Cornwall, Devon and Somerset and offer them support over a 12-month period.
As part of GAIN20, businesses which are considered ‘game-changing’ are given exclusive access to networking groups and events, Plymouth University facilities, equipment, knowledge and peer-to-peer support from the other members.
Melissa said: “It’s fantastic to be part of GAIN20 – a network of like-minded business leaders working at the cutting edge of their various industries to bring jobs and growth to the South West. We are looking forward to building relationships and seeing what the future holds for us and our peers.”
The re-launch of Pixxcell is being closely watched by many groups – from professional travel writers and photographers, to international brands and major museums – keen to unleash the potential of this new and innovative digital storytelling platform.
