Cornish Producer Wins Top Spot At National Pig Awards
A Cornish farming family are celebrating this week after being named Producer Retailer of the Year at the 2018 National Pig Awards.
Sally Lugg of Primrose Herd was presented with the award by former British tennis number one and TV presenter Andrew Castle at a prestigious ceremony at London’s Lancaster Hotel on Monday night (November 19th).
She was thrilled with the win, saying: “Looking after pigs properly and producing all our own products here on the farm is quite a relentless occupation so to receive this kind of recognition from our industry peers is really rewarding.”
The National Pig Awards are staged annually by Pig World and Lewis Business Media to recognise excellence and innovation in the sector; this was the biggest event yet with more than 400 industry leaders in attendance.
Pig World publisher Simon Lewis said: “Congratulations to Primrose Herd who were the deserved winners on the night. Once again these awards have highlighted the breadth and depth of talent, drive and ambition in the sector and it is a pleasure to recognize the winners.”
Sally, her husband Bill and their three children – Rachael, Abi and Josh – plus long-standing staff member Jake Gregory, describe the rearing of traditional breed pigs at their farm near Redruth as a labour of love.
The pigs enjoy outdoor life and a natural diet, which encourages slow growth; Primrose Herd pork has won multiple national awards for its quality and flavour.
Sally explains: “When we began keeping pigs back in 1999 and selling our own pork at local markets we set ourselves extremely high welfare and quality standards and, despite all the pressures food producers are under these days, we have maintained those standards. I’m really proud of that and also thankful for our loyal customers who have been so supportive.”
The Luggs have over 50 wholesale customers, from small B&B’s, cafes and farm shops to some of the most acclaimed restaurants and hotels in the South West.
Primrose Herd’s products are also available through the Cornish Food Box, and the family can be found at Helston Farmers Market every month as well as other seasonal events across Cornwall.
The full range can also be purchased online with home delivery available across the UK, and subscribers regularly receive updates and special offers.
To celebrate their win, in the run up to Christmas Primrose Herd is offering 20% off all online orders over £25, and free delivery to all TR postcodes. To find out more visit www.primroseherd.co.uk
