New plastic-free local market set to launch.
A new regular market launches in Falmouth this month, with an irresistible line-up of local artisan producers and a strong sustainable ethos.
Discovery Market will take place for the first time on Friday 19th May from 10am – 5pm; it will continue to entice shoppers to Discovery Quay outside the National Maritime Museum every Friday, bar a few dates when major events take over the quayside.
The first market includes amongst other foodstuffs: Great Scott Hot Sauces, Cornish Meadow Preserves, Food of the Gods Raw Chocolate, Moreish Mushrooms, Black Rock Gin, Landmark Coffee, and an array of fresh veg from Roots and Shoots – a market garden located just outside Falmouth.
Pysk, a fishmonger based on Discovery Quay which sells traceable local seafood, will be part of the market too with an outside stall selling a wide range of sustainably caught fish, and shellfish traditionally harvested in Cornish waters.
Meanwhile, street food sustenance will be provided by My Mum Makes who serve authentic Thai cuisine, and The Smoking Longhorn who are known for their ‘low and slow’ BBQ food and legendary burgers.
The artisan makers showcasing their wares at the very first market will include Real Pressed Seaweed, Lynn’s Willow, Tide and Country, The Mariners Supply Co., and Blystra Candles.
The new venture is being led by the team behind Truro Farmers Market, a vibrant and popular market collective and the first of its kind to be established in the UK, which is about to enter its 25th year.
Market Director Stewart Girvan said: “The location at Discover Quay is fantastic, with high footfall, lots of space to enjoy a relaxed shopping experience, and the wonderful backdrop of the National Maritime Museum and Falmouth’s busy waterfront.”
He continued: “The market will be easily accessible by foot, bike, train, bus, and boat, and we hope it will become a weekly event for local people grabbing their foodie treats for the weekend. For many visitors arriving by boat or train it will deliver a great first impression of Falmouth and the vibrant, forward-looking community of artisan producers who call Cornwall home.”
The market will be completely free of single use plastic; all traders are required to use only wooden, paper, compostable or Veg Ware packaging and are encouraged to offer refills where appropriate.
Rebecca Ready, who is Market Manager for Discovery Market, said: “Not only are we offering a great shopping experience, we also want the market to have a positive impact on the local community and environment. We’re accepting applications from prospective traders on an ongoing basis, so if you’d like to be part of something amazing, get in touch!”
