Truro Farmers Market – The Cookbook
Every now and then a project comes along you can really get your teeth into – literally in the case of Truro Farmers Market – The Cookbook! So often in our line of work, content is gone in the blink of an eye as words and images scroll past at an ever-increasing pace. Not so with this beautiful hardback book, which features recipes and stories charting the seasons at this thriving local market.
Chef Todd Studley devised a series of delicious recipes using a bounty of market produce. Todd was the perfect choice for this project – a highly experienced chef but also chief home cook for a busy working family. His approach to cooking seasonally with local food is therefore pragmatic and sustainable.
As Jude Kereama puts it in the Foreword: “The recipes have been thoughtfully put together to inspire you through the cycle of the seasons, and are designed to be both approachable and affordable. They also eminently suit the Cornish lifestyle, with a focus on outdoor cooking over live fire, ideas for enjoying the very freshest fish, and nourishing comfort food for those months of long, windswept walks on empty beaches.”
Lucy, who has assisted the market with marketing and PR for many years, planned the content and interviewed producers in order to tell their stories. From talking regenerative farming with Nick of St Piran’s Pork, to discussing life at sea with fisherman Chris Bean, she was in her element.
Bringing this all vividly to life through the lens were photographer and Market Coordinator Stewart Girvan, along with fellow photographer and stylist Rebecca Lily. Stewart, Rebecca, and Todd travelled to farms deep in the Cornish countryside, organic market gardens, and quiet creek sides where the freshest day boat fish is brought into land. Preparing and cooking so much of the produce in-situ, and getting around the table with the hard-working producers themselves, was one of the many joys of this project and reflects the sense of community the market embodies.
Having spent much of the year gathering a wealth of content, we placed it into the capable hands of designer and illustrator Becky Hutchens. A creative, agile, and very patient designer with enormous attention to detail, Becky is responsible for everything from the overall look and feel of the book, down to the tiniest detail of every recipe layout. Her vibrant colour schemes and eye-catching illustrations invite you to dive into the pages of this recipe book, which we hope will become a constant kitchen companion across Cornwall and beyond.
