New Contemporary Glass Gallery For Newlyn

Glass artist Julia Mills opened a new gallery in Newlyn this month, adding her work to the wealth of quality Cornish art already on display in the town.

The Julia Mills Gallery at 1, The Coombe, showcases the artist’s striking framed glass panels and smaller creations – or ‘tiddlers’ as they are known – all of which are made in response to the light and landscape of Cornwall.

Julia, who has previously occupied galleries in Porthleven and Mousehole, is excited to have found the perfect exhibition and workshop space in her home town of Newlyn.

Julia commented: “The gallery is right in the heart of the town and we’re hoping that our bright, eye-catching window displays will prove irresistible to passers-by.”

She added: “There is a real buzz about Newlyn at the moment, with great restaurants, galleries and our very own Filmhouse. It’s fantastic to be a part of that.”

The work of a selection of other local artists will also be on display; paintings by Emma Williams, Billy Burman and Sophie Harding, driftwood figures by Lynn Muir, and ceramics by Lincoln Kirby Bell, Sue Binns and Jane Wellens.

As well as exhibiting finished pieces, Julia will be using half of the available space as a workshop; visitors will be able to see the process of creation and discuss ideas for unique commissions.

Julia finds inspiration in the changing light of the Cornish coastline, and in her shoreline and moorland walks in West Penwith.

These influences can be seen in the colours and motifs she incorporates in everything from small, framed panels to larger bespoke pieces.

Sourcing high quality glass from around the world, Julia works with the techniques of acid-etching and sand-blasting to craft the light as it falls onto the glass – experimenting with translucence, colour combinations and organic forms.

Each piece transforms its surroundings with multi-faceted, colourful highlights and mesmerising reflections, especially when hung in or near a window.
